How to compare
movers in France

The lowest price is not always the best deal. Five checks that make prices comparable, and the warning signs to walk away from.

1. Give every mover the same move

Two prices are only comparable if they price the same job. Most gaps between estimates come from different descriptions, not different companies. Before you ask anyone, write down:

  • Your home: apartment or house, floor, lift or not, and its size
  • Truck access: where it can stop, and whether a parking permit is planned
  • The distance from the truck to your door, in metres
  • The narrowest passage: staircase, corridor, door (a photo helps)
  • Bulky, heavy or fragile items: piano, safe, large wardrobe
  • Two or three possible dates, if you can

2. Check what the price includes

Same move, same service level. French movers usually offer three: Eco (loading, transport, delivery, furniture protected), Standard (plus packing of fragile items) and Premium (plus packing of everything else). Then check the extras that often sit outside the headline figure:

  • Dismantling and reassembly of furniture
  • The parking permit, and who files it (how it works)
  • A furniture lift, if you live above the third floor without a suitable lift
  • Carrying distance beyond what was declared
  • VAT: prices for private clients should include it

3. Check the company, not just the price

Every French company has a SIREN number. Look it up on the official company directory to see whether it is active, since when, and its registered activity.

Then search its name on BODACC, the official gazette of legal notices: receivership or liquidation shows up there. A company in insolvency proceedings can still look active in the directory.

Finally, ask for its certificate of insurance. A professional mover carries liability insurance and cover for the goods it transports.

4. Read the reviews that matter

The average rating says little on its own. Read the last twelve months, and read the negative reviews first: damage, delays and price increases on the day are the patterns to look for. A reply from the company to a complaint is a good sign; the same complaint repeated is not.

5. Walk away from these

Any one of these is enough to move on to the next mover:

  • A price given over the phone without asking about volume, floors or access
  • No written estimate before the day
  • A company you cannot find in the official directory, or with notices on BODACC
  • No certificate of insurance when you ask for it
  • Pressure to decide today

How the Moverz list does it for you

On Moverz you describe your move once, and up to 10 movers price that same move for each service level. The list is sorted by price by default, or by Google reviews.

Each mover shown is a sound company with a Moverz Score of more than 75/100, calculated from company registers, published accounts, BODACC notices and reviews; the method is public. Moverz does not certify movers: it shows you the score so you can weigh it against the price.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many movers should I compare?

Three is a minimum to see the spread, as long as they price the same move. On Moverz, up to 10 movers price it at once.

Should I take the lowest price?

Only if it prices the same move, includes the same things and passes the company checks. A low figure from a company in receivership is not a saving.

Where do I check a French moving company?

On the official company directory (annuaire-entreprises.data.gouv.fr) for its status, and on BODACC for insolvency notices. Ask the company for its certificate of insurance.

Do I need a home visit?

Not if you describe your move precisely: floors, lift, access, bulky items. A visit or a video call remains useful for a large house or unusual items.

Up to 10 movers, one move described once. Compare, choose, book online in 5 minutes.
